After years of careful planning and design, in late May 2017, the City of El Cajon began construction of the new El Cajon Animal Shelter.
The El Cajon Animal Shelter, a 14,703-square-foot one-story building with a 2,600-square- foot exterior, will include administrative offices, housing for animals, veterinary services for sick and injured sheltered animals, grooming, play/interaction areas, pet adoption services, an exercise area, and more. The new shelter doubles the size of the current 50-year-old shelter, located nearby at 1275 N. Marshall Avenue.
The modern facility will cost approximately $9.3 million and is funded by Proposition O special revenues, the half-cent sales tax increase approved by voters in November of 2004 specifically for improvements to public safety facilities and a new animal shelter. The special tax ended in 2015.
Ferguson Pape Baldwin Associates are providing project architectural services and CW Driver is the general contractor providing construction management services.
The shelter is expected to open by the summer of 2018!
Progress of Construction
The crew has been working diligently this Holiday season to keep on schedule for completion. The roofing and exterior weather proofing is complete, architectural high-roof cedar planks have been installed and sealed, exterior doors and hardware have been installed, and storefront door installation is finalized. The crew is currently working on fabricating wall backing for the animal artwork, installing light fixtures, aluminum composite panels and Corten Steel panels, and finalizing radiant heating and HVAC. We are on schedule!

After less than a month of grading, the foundation has been formed and the walls began to be built for the new Animal Shelter. Despite the hot weather, construction has progressed rapidly and the visible activity has been exciting to watch. What cannot be seen in the photo is the installation of sewer lines and storm drains and the pouring of the building’s foundation, all of which has been momentously accomplished in July.
