Public Health & Welfare - Urgency Ordinance
Date: October 27, 2017
Public Health & Welfare • Urgency Ordinance
Out of an abundance of caution for the health and safety of its residents, on October 24, 2017, the El Cajon City Council passed an urgency ordinance prohibiting “Food Sharing” in City Public Spaces, which includes City Parks. This action was prompted by the Public Health Emergency declared by the County of San Diego on September 1, 2017 and the State of Emergency declared by the State of California on October 13, 2017 due to public health, safety and welfare concerns.
"Food sharing event" means a non-social gathering that is planned, organized, promoted or advertised where food is distributed or offered for charitable purposes at no cost, or for a nominal charge, to any member of the public.
Examples of social gatherings not applicable to this urgency ordinance are family reunions, birthday parties, baptisms, youth sport team celebrations, school field trips, and wedding anniversaries.
With the help of service organizations, the City is exploring a long-term solution to protect citizens in public places.
