Sewer Testing Continues through January 2020
The City is testing portions of the sewer system using a non-toxic, non-staining artificial smoke substance. The test will help locate possible leaks, defects, improper connections, and the source of storm water infiltration into the sewer system. Phases 1 & 2 have already been completed and phases 3 & 4 will be completed by January 15, 2020.
The sewer testing is part of the City’s efforts to ensure a safe, reliable and efficient wastewater collection system for El Cajon residents and businesses. Smoke testing has been used for more than 30 years and is the industry standard to cost-effectively identify sewer line problems. The specific artificial smoke product being used is endorsed by the EPA and is considered harmless to humans, pets, food, and material items.
During the testing period, plumes of the harmless smoke will be seen coming out of roof vents, manhole lids, streets, yards, and cracks. Crews will be on hand to identify and mark problem areas.
The map below outlines the various phases which have been completed as well as those in progress.
