Post Date:05/05/2020 4:23 PM

TYPE OF INCIDENT: MULTIPLE VEHICLE FATAL COLLISION

DATE AND TIME OF INCIDENT: 05/05/2020 at 1:28 pm

LOCATION OF INCIDENT: 1100 E Washington, El Cajon

RESUME OF INCIDENT:

On 05/05/2020 at approximately 1:28 PM. El Cajon Police Officers and Heartland Fire Personnel responded to the 1100 Block of E Washington in El Cajon reference reports of a vehicle which had crashed into a construction site. Witnesses reported hearing an explosion and said that multiple vehicles were on fire. Upon arrival officers and firefighters found four vehicles engulfed in flames. Two of those vehicles were construction equipment. Heartland firefighters was able to extinguish the fire and a single occupant was found deceased in a 2000 Lexus RX350.

After a preliminary investigation of the scene and talking to witnesses, it appears the Lexus was traveling eastbound on E Washington at a high rate of speed. The Lexus entered the construction area which drew the attention of one of the workers who was seated in a 2017 Dodge full size truck on the roadway. The worker was able to exit his truck and warn the rest of the workers on site of the inbound vehicle. One worker, who was on an excavator, was able to flee the piece of equipment but was struck in the back by a toolbox that flew from the truck during the collision. That worker received minor injuries and was transported to the hospital by medics. It is unknown at this time if drugs or alcohol were a factor in this collision, and the investigation is on-going.
The El Cajon Police Department is asking anyone with information regarding this collision to call (619) 579-3311.
