RESIDENTIAL RELIEF EFFORTS

Utility & Housing Support - 

Beginning Tuesday, May 26, 2020, the agencies listed below will begin accepting applications for rental and utility assistance. Funding for this program is limited and only the first 150 applications will be accepted. The purpose of the program is to assist low-income El Cajon residents experiencing financial hardships during this time. It is for those with existing leases who are unable to pay their rent or utilities due to the COVID-19 emergency. IMPORTANT: Due to social distancing, agencies will NOT be receiving walk-in clients. Please call ahead or visit the websites of the organizations to apply.

Home Start, Inc. Motel Voucher Program. This is for individuals/families seeking emergency housing. Participants will be provided with temporary shelter at a motel and case management services. Please contact Home Start, Inc. to participate. Phone- (619) 430-0032   Email: housing@home-start.org

 

Sewer Bills - The City will continue to send sewer bills in May and June but customers can choose to pay part of it or none at all.  The amount not paid will be added to the next bill, without penalty or interest. Please be advised: late fee charges on unpaid sewer balances will resume beginning January 2021For more information on sewer bills or to make payments, visit the City's sewer bill page.

Food Support - More than $130,000 from the City's General Fund was released to food assistance non-profits and faith-based organizations to ensure that no shortage of food occurs for residents of El Cajon. See the Food Resources & Calendar page for more information on food assistance.

The County of San Diego has created a new program for older adults to receive up to three meals delivered to their homes per day. The Great Plates Delivery program runs through June 10, but may be extended further. See the County's website for qualifications and to sign up.

We encourage you to apply for the program you believe best fits your needs and the related agency/organization will determine your eligibility for benefits.

FINANCIAL & GENERAL RESOURCES

  • East County Assist - Repository for resources for various communities throughout East County. Resources include shelters, public assistance, food resources, healthcare services, and veterans services.
  • Families First Coronavirus Response Act - This act expands access to emergency paid sick leave for leave related to COVID-19. Employees at companies with fewer than 500 employees are eligible with a different number of hours available depending on full- or part-time status. 
  • Salvation Army of El Cajon -  The Salvation Army Red Shield Community Center of East County has shifted to an Emergency Management Operations center and all regular classes and membership offerings are currently suspended. During this time, current services include:
    • Food distribution
    • Hygiene kits
    • Diapers
    • Adult diapers
    • Virtual Sunday worship services
    • Social and spiritual community support
    • During this time, the Salvation Army requests that you please call (619) 440-4683 to schedule an appointment.
