Election Information

The City of El Cajon consolidates its General Municipal Elections with the Statewide General Elections held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November of even-numbered years.

The November 3, 2020 Election will be held to elect one city council member for District 2, one city council member for District 3, and one city council member for District 4.

The City of El Cajon is a Charter City governed by a five-member City Council consisting of a Mayor and four (4) Council Members.  The term of office for each member is four years, with staggered terms.


Your Vote Counts!

The deadline to *register to vote in any election is 15 days prior to the election. Registration forms are available in the El Cajon City Hall, 200 Civic Center Way, as well as online with the County of San Diego Registrar of Voters or the California Secretary of State. *Any changes to address, party affiliation or name, require a re-registration.


Running for Office Qualifications

To qualify as a candidate for Mayor or member of the City Council, an individual must be a U.S. Citizen, minimum of 18 years of age, on or before Election day, a resident and a registered voter in the City of El Cajon.

With everyone’s health in mind, the City of El Cajon will be requiring appointments for candidate services. We will require physical distancing, face masks or coverings, and a temperature check upon entrance to the City Clerk’s Office.
