In late May 2017, after years of careful planning and design, the City of El Cajon began construction of the new El Cajon Animal Shelter.
The El Cajon Animal Shelter, a 14,703-square-foot one-story building with a 2,600-square- foot exterior, will include administrative offices, housing for animals, veterinary services for sick and injured sheltered animals, grooming, play/interaction areas, pet adoption services, an exercise area, and more. The new shelter doubles the size of the current 50-year-old shelter, located nearby at 1275 N. Marshall Avenue.
The modern facility cost approximately $9.3 million and was funded by Proposition O special revenues, the half-cent sales tax increase approved by voters in November of 2004, specifically for improvements to public safety facilities and a new animal shelter. The special tax ended in 2015.
Architectural services were provided by Ferguson Pape Baldwin Architects and general contractor, CW Driver, provided construction management services.

Progress of Construction
The progression of construction does not cease to amaze us! Despite the recent heat wave, crews have been working hard and finished building the masonry walls and started work on the sub-foundation infrastructure. The utility route planning is almost near completion. Foundation is scheduled to pour next month.

After less than a month of grading, the foundation has been formed and the walls began to be built for the new Animal Shelter. Despite the hot weather, construction has progressed rapidly and the visible activity has been exciting to watch. What cannot be seen in the photo is the installation of sewer lines and storm drains and the pouring of the building’s foundation, all of which has been momentously accomplished in July.
